 Scholarships, Grants, and Awards

--- Research Grants are awarded in amounts up to $2,500 for clearly conceptualized research proposals concerning education. Proposals are evaluated and grants awarded semiannually. Recipients are notified by the end August for April submissions, or the end of February for October submissions. A research grant proposal can be for an independent project or a part of a larger project, such as a dissertation. Research grants are funded by the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment and the Maxine Northrop Stephanian Fund.          See recipient list

--- Georgia Sachs Adams Grants are awarded to PLT members to defray the cost of attending conferences to make scholarly presentations. The grants were established in 2008. They are sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a bequest from Lorraine Mathies to honor the memory of Past International President Georgia Sachs Adams.          See recipient list

---The Student Support Scholarships provide $750 for tuition or books. Recipients may be part-time or full-time students. Recipients are notified by July 1, and funds are disbursed directly to the institution in which the applicant is enrolled. The scholarships are funded by numerous small donations that many Thetans voluntarily add to their international dues each year. --- Pi Lambda Theta contributes one certification fee each year to the financial assistance office of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The first scholarship was given in 2003. Scholarships are funded by numerous small donations that many Thetans voluntarily add to their international dues each year. --- The Tobin Sorenson Physical Education Scholarships provide $1,000 for tuition to an outstanding student who intends to pursue a career at the K-12 level as a physical education teacher, adapted physical education teacher, coach, recreational therapist, dance therapist or similar professional focusing on teaching the knowledge and use of the human body. A recipient may be a full-time or a part-time student. If the recipient is qualified to be a member of Pi Lambda Theta but is not a member, a complimentary one-year membership is extended. Recipients are notified by April 1, and funds are disbursed directly to the institution in which the applicant is enrolled. The scholarship was established in 1999. It is sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from Barbara Wynne Sorenson to honor the memory of her son.          See recipient list

Bernardo Ramos Ebeo Naval Architecture and
Marine Engineering Scholarship and Excellence
in Teaching Award

--- Bernardo Ramos Ebeo Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Scholarships are awarded to students at NAMEI Polytechnic Institute. The Bernardo Ramos Ebeo Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Excellence in Teaching Awards are awarded to instructors at NAMEI Polytechnic Institute. The scholarships and awards were established in 2000. They are sustained by a restricted fund created in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from Marlene K. Ebeo. --- Beta Chi Scholarships are awarded annually by the Beta Chi Chapter of Pi Lambda Theta. The scholarships were established in 1999. They are sustained by a restricted fund created in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from the Beta Chi Chapter at William Paterson University. --- Daniel Fullmer/Janet Ishikawa Scholarships are awarded to graduate students in counseling psychology at the University of Denver who have earned a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarships were established in 2003. They are sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from Janet Ishikawa-Fullmer and Daniel Fullmer. --- Hawai’i Chapter Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students in education at a regionally accredited institution, who have junior standing or higher, and have earned a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. --- Janet Ishikawa – Daniel Fullmer Scholarships are awarded to interns in the Dean’s Leader for the Next Generation post-doctoral program at the College of Education of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The scholarships were established in 2005. They are sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from Janet Ishikawa-Fullmer and Daniel Fullmer. --- Kara Vaughn Jackson Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students at Grambling State University, who have junior standing or higher, and have earned a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarships were established in 2003. They are sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from Janet Ishikawa-Fullmer and Daniel Fullmer. --- Sylvia and Arlo Vopni Scholarships are awarded to students in the teacher education program of the College of Education at the University of Washington. A recipient must have earned a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and intend to teach mathematics or science. The scholarships were established in 2000. They are sustained by a restricted fund created in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment with a gift from the Zeta Chapter at the University Washington. Professional Development Grant

--- Frances F. Shimotsu Professional Development Grants are awarded to chapter leaders in Pi Lambda Theta Far West Region V to reimburse travel and registration costs of attending Pi Lambda Theta Biennial Councils. The grants were established in 2006. They are sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment pursuant to a contribution by members of Pi Lambda Theta Far West Region V to honor Past International President Frances F. Shimotsu.

---  The Alpha Iota/Pi Lambda Theta—Edna Mae Soper Teaching Excellence Award is presented in recognition of outstanding classroom teaching in grades K-12. The award consists of a cash payment of five hundred dollars ($500). The award was established in 2006. It is sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment pursuant to a contribution by the Alpha Iota chapter of Pi Lambda Theta to honor the memory of Edna Mae Soper, a classroom teacher.    See recipient list

--- The Anna Tracey Memorial Award is presented in recognition of producers of a communications medium that enhances the image of the elderly. The award consists of a cash payment of four hundred dollars ($400) and a framed certificate. The award was established in 1975. It is sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment pursuant to a contribution by Lillian Tracey Barry, of Rho Chapter, to honor the memory of her mother.          See recipient list

The award consists of a cash payment of five hundred dollars ($500) and a framed certificate. If the recipient is qualified to be a member of Pi Lambda Theta but is not a member, a complimentary one-year membership is extended. --- The Ella Victoria Dobbs Award is presented in recognition of unique or outstanding published research conducted by a Pi Lambda Thetan. The award consists of a cash payment of four hundred dollars ($400) and a framed certificate. The award was established in 1965. It is sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment pursuant to a bequest from Ella Victoria Dobbs. Dobbs was instrumental in the founding of Pi Lambda Theta and served as president from 1921 to 1925.

--- The Excellence in Education Award is presented in recognition of commitment to excellence in education and unique contributions to the field. The award consists of an engraved plaque and one thousand dollars ($1,000). If the recipient is not a member of Pi Lambda Theta, a complimentary lifetime honorary membership is extended. The recipient is announced at Biennial Council and serves as the keynote speaker. Expenses are paid to attend and receive the award. The award was established in 1979.     See recipient list

--- The Frances M. Beck Middle-School "Ah-Ha" Reading Award is presented in recognition of a middle-school educator or team of educators who has designed an effective, replicable program for advancing reading/literacy. The award consists of a cash payment of two thousand dollars ($2000). Established in 2008, the award is underwritten by the John and Frances Beck Foundation and is co-sponsored by Pi Lambda Theta.     See recipient list

--- The Graduate Student Scholar Award is presented in recognition of an outstanding graduate student who is an education major. The award consists of a cash payment of one thousand dollars ($1,000) and a framed certificate. If the recipient is qualified to be a member of Pi Lambda Theta but is not a member, a complimentary one-year membership is extended. ---  The Janyce Yoshizawa Excellence in Classroom Teaching Award is presented in recognition of outstanding classroom teaching in grades K-6. The award consists of a cash payment of one thousand dollars ($1,000) and a framed certificate. The award was established in 1998. It is sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment pursuant to a contribution by Sumi Y. Makey to honor the memory of her sister, Janyce Yoshizawa, a classroom teacher.          See recipient list

--- The Lillian and Henry Barry Award in Human Relations is presented in recognition of outstanding service to people with disabilities. The award consists of a cash payment of four hundred dollars ($400) and a framed certificate. The award was established in 1977. It is sustained by a restricted fund established in the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment pursuant to a contribution by Lillian Tracey Barry, of Rho Chapter.           See recipient list

--- The Thelma Jean Brown Classroom Teacher Award is presented in recognition of outstanding classroom teaching. The award is intended to honor a teacher for accomplishments while teaching at a school that is not exceptionally well supported financially. The award consists of a cash payment of five hundred dollars ($500) and a framed certificate. If the recipient is qualified to be a member of Pi Lambda Theta but is not a member, a complimentary one-year membership is extended. The award, established in 1997, is funded by Thelma Brown, a career classroom teacher and a life member of Pi Lambda Theta. Thelma Brown has served the association in many capacities at all levels, including two terms as international vice president from 1989 to 1993.          See recipient list

--- The Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award is presented in recognition of a faculty adviser who demonstrates a cooperative, professional spirit within the chapter and the educational community. The award consists of an engraved plaque. The award was established in 1979.        See recipient list
